Eagles safety Reed Blankenship shares injury update

Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship officially inked his one-year, $3.9 million extension on Tuesday, and shared an injury update with reporters afterward. 

Blankenship, who battled through injuries in 2023, revealed that he had undergone surgery on his groin earlier this year. 

“Unfortunately, I had to have surgery,” Blankenship said. “It was one of those personal decisions whether or not to do it and felt that was the best decision possible. Right now I feel great. I’m 100 percent back to normal. It feels good not being as sore as I was this past season dealing with it. I’m ready to go. I’m really excited to show what I can do.”

Blankenship's groin injury came late last season and kept him sidelined for the Eagles' wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

“It was one of those freak ordeals,” he said. “You extend a little bit in the wrong direction, and something tears a little bit. I ended up having to get it repaired, which I think I needed because they said it was a little chronic and had some stuff going on. It’s not even about how long I played on it, it’s just getting fixed up for the next one.”

Despite injuries, Blankenship made 15 starts for the Birds last fall and led the team in tackles with 108. He also had 11 passes defended, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery.
